A little history….
In 1986, I went with my parents to view their next potential business venture.
Dover Street Newsagents was a quintessential British shop, traditional to its English heritage, standing on a site that has been trading for hundreds of years. As we left, the current owner offered me an ice cream from the shop’s freezer, and I was smitten! The idea of having a whole shop full of sweets in your front room was definitely my style of living!
24 years later, with my own husband, John and 3 children, we are continuing that lifestyle but with a twist! Our shop is still classically a newsagent, tobacconist and confectioner, but as competition of supermarkets and the decline of newspaper sales put pressure on small shops like us, we realised we had to do something different if we were to have any hope of handing down to our children.
In 2018 and with the online business growing from strength to strength we decided to move to the peaceful village of Draperstown in Northern Ireland. Whilst this has presented a number of challenges we are able to maintain the same price structure as before for all of our products which we feel are the most competitive in the industry and delivery times to the mainland very much the same as when we were based in Canterbury. In fact we have lowered our delivery charges passing on the savings to our valued customers.
Birth of a candy store
Early in 2013, I found some Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups in a shop and took some home, as they were our favourite treat when we lived overseas. We left a few on our shop’s shelf, and were amazed at how quickly they sold out.
Our collection of American confectionery expanded month by month, based on products we knew and suggestions from our customers. Now we stock over 700 varieties of candies, chocolates, sodas and grocery products and we are always actively seeking the next new product to introduce to the British market.
The display at Auntie Ammie’s Candy Shop changes every month and each time it changes, it becomes “Our Best Display Yet!” according to John!
In 2018 we made the decision to sell our shop and focus on the website which was, and still is growing from strength to strength. In doing so we could concentrate on maintaining the same level of service as if you were walking into our shop and also in a bid to keep costs down which we could then pass on to you the customer.
We are fully committed to serving you and we care about the service you receive. We work closely with the couriers that we use in an effort to resolve issues fast and effectively should they arise and you can rest assured that we will do all that we can to get you your products first time and delivered to the very high standard that both you and we would expect to receive.
We work very hard to find you the latest products and there is always that air of excitement when new items arrive. With so many choices it can sometimes be difficult to make the right choices but with our years of experience and listening to our customers we more often get it right much to their delight.
