A little history….
In 1986, I went with my parents to view their next potential business venture.
Dover Street Newsagents was a quintessential British shop, traditional to its English heritage, standing on a site that has been trading for hundreds of years. As we left, the current owner offered me an ice cream from the shop’s freezer, and I was smitten! The idea of having a whole shop full of sweets in your front room was definitely my style of living!
24 years later, with my own husband, John and 3 children, we are continuing that lifestyle but with a twist! Our shop is still classically a newsagent, tobacconist and confectioner, but as competition of supermarkets and the decline of newspaper sales put pressure on small shops like us, we realised we had to do something different if we were to have any hope of handing down to our children.
Birth of a candy store
Early in 2013, I found some Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups in a shop and took some home, as they were our favourite treat when we lived overseas. We left a few on our shop’s shelf, and were amazed at how quickly they sold out.
Our collection of American confectionery expanded month by month, based on products we knew and suggestions from our customers. Now we stock over 200 varieties of candies, chocolates, sodas and grocery products and we are always actively seeking the next new product to introduce to the British market.
The display at Auntie Ammie’s Candy Shop changes every month and each time it changes, it becomes “Our Best Display Yet!” according to John!
